미국 대학 입시에서 교외활동은 높은 GPA와 좋은 시험 성적만큼이나 중요한 요소입니다. 특히 상위권 대학에 지원하는 학생들은 학업 외 활동에서 자신만의 색깔과 진정성을 보여줘야 합니다. 오늘은 ECLAB에서 정리한 교외활동 준비 팁을 소개합니다.

Extracurricular activities are equally vital as high grades and test scores for students striving to make a strong impression in top U.S. college applications. While academic achievements demonstrate intellect, extracurriculars reveal a student’s passions, values, and leadership potential. Here are some tips to help your activities stand out!

Tip 1. 🕳️ 활동의 깊이와 범위를 고민해 보세요! Think Beyond Basics

Collegevine에서는 교외활동의 수준에 따라 크게 4개의 티어로 나누어 소개합니다.
상위 티어일수록 대학교 입학 사정관들에게 더 큰 인상을 줄 수 있기에 높은 티어의 활동들은 그만큼 활동의 깊이를 가지기 때문입니다.

티어 1: 전국 또는 국제적으로 인정받는 성과
예시/ IBO 올림피아드 수상 또는 Intel 국제 과학 및 에지니어링 페어(ISEF) 수상
티어 2: 주(State)나 지역에서의 리더십 및 성과
예시/ 주(State) 단위 오케스트라의 일원으로 활동하거나 주(State) 과학 대회 우승
티어 3: 학교 내에서 두드러진 역할을 수행하는 활동
예시/ 학교의 스포츠 팀 주장을 맡거나 학교 내 동아리에서 중요한 역할을 하는 것.
티어 4: 활동에 참여는 했지만 특별한 성과를 남기지 않은 경우
예시/ 일반 회원으로 참여한 학생회나 단발성 봉사활동 참여

대학은 깊이 있고 지속적인 참여를 선호하기 때문에, 단순히 다양한 활동에 참여하는 것보다 본인의 관심 분야에서 의미 있는 성과를 만드는 것이 중요합니다.

Admissions officers at highly selective schools often look for activities beyond mere participation. CollegeVine categorizes these into four “tiers,” with Tier 1 representing national or international awards and Tier 2 highlighting state-level achievements. Tier 3 indicates activities such as taking a leadership role for a sports team or club, and Tier 4 activities are categorized as participation in minor volunteering or student leadership-related clubs. Not all activities need to be Tier 1 or 2, but depth and dedication are essential.1.

Tip 3. 🪂 관심 분야에 맞는 활동을 선택하세요! Match Activities to Interests

특정 활동을 시작하기 어려운 분들은 본인의 흥미와 관련된 분야를 기준으로 선택해 보세요.
분야를 정해놓고 시작한다면, 일관성 있는 프로필을 구축할 수 있고, 다양한 영역에서 경험을 쌓으며 균형 잡힌 모습을 보여줄 수 있습니다.

When deciding on activities, select ones aligned with your academic or personal interests. This builds a more authentic and compelling profile.

Tip 4. ⛱️ 선발 프로그램과 썸머 프로그램 지원! Consider Competitive Programs

더 경쟁력 있는 활동을 찾고 있다면, 선발형 썸머 프로그램에 도전하는 것도 좋은 방법입니다.

📍 Never Such Innocence International Competition: Art, Speech, Song (2024/2025)

2024~2025년 Never Such Innocence 대회는 9세에서 18세 청소년들이 "미래의 전쟁을 어떻게 막을 수 있을까?"라는 주제로 자기 생각을 표현하는 국제 대회입니다. 시, 미술, 연설, 노래의 네 가지 부문에 걸쳐 출품할 수 있으며, 각 부문당 한 작품씩 제출할 수 있습니다.

The 2024-2025 Never Such Innocence competition invites youth aged 9 to 18 to express their thoughts on "How can we prevent war in the future?" Participants can submit entries in four categories: poetry, art, speech, and song, with one submission allowed per category.
